The Insurance and Financial Savings Ombudsman has rejected a complaint from the insured after his vehicle was stolen and the insurer failed to pay out.

When the insured bought the car he arranged insurance through the finance company.  A year later the car was stolen and he made a claim on the policy.

It transpired that the insured had failed to disclose four criminal convictions within the last five years.  The Ombudsman took advice from insurance underwriters and they all said that they would have refused insurance in those circumstances.  The insurer was therefore entitled to decline the claim and cancel the policy.

It is vital when you are taking out insurance to disclose all relevant information, including past convictions (whether or not you are asked about them) as a failure to disclose anything which is material can result in the insurance being void.
